State Liquor Authority Underage Drinking Detail Nets 4 Sales to Minors in Schenectady

The New York State Liquor Authority (SLA) today announced the results of an underage sting operation conducted on May 16, 2019 in Schenectady, addressing concerns regarding businesses around Union College who were selling to underage patrons.  SLA investigators, the Schenectady Police Department and Union College Security, working with underage agents, conducted an underage-drinking sting operation visiting 7 licensed premises.  In total, the undercover minor was able to purchase alcohol at 4 of the 7 businesses visited.

The businesses selling to minors were:

  • Union Convenience
    1502 Van Vranken Avenue
  • Goose Hill Wine & Liquor
    1529 Van Vranken Avenue
  • Phil Englebardt’s Liquor Mart
    511-513 Union Street
  • Adeebs Deli & Grocery
    766 Eastern Avenue

The businesses refusing to sell to minors were:

  • Mohawk Grocery & Deli
    575 Nott Street
  • Express Food Mart
    814 Eastern Avenue
  • N P Petroleum
    1501 Union Street

Licensees charged by the SLA with underage sales face civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation, with fines starting from $2,500 to $3,000 for a first-time offense. Repeat offenders also face possible suspension or revocation of their licenses.  In addition, employees or licensees who sell to minors can be arrested and charged with a misdemeanor.  Undercover decoys work under the direct supervision of SLA Beverage Control Investigators.
